Minister Says Ministry of Defence Examining Potential Threat from Chinese Cars, with Staff Told to Refrain from Secret Talk in Vehicles.

A defense minister has confirmed that the MoD is currently investigating the possible security risks associated with Chinese vehicles, while personnel have been told to refrain from talking about secret information in all vehicles.

Security Advice for MoD Personnel

In a recently aired appearance on LBC, Luke Pollard addressed reports that Ministry of Defence staff have been instructed not to discuss secret information while travelling in China-made vehicles.

He explained that the MoD is “investigating” Chinese vehicles within its fleets, however emphasised that security is a issue in all contemporary cars.

Our department has a fleet of tens of thousands of vehicles in the Ministry of Defence and Chinese ones account for a tiny fraction.
But whether you’re driving a Chinese car or a car from another country, our instruction to our people is to avoid connecting MoD technology into their car, not to have conversations at a secret level in any vehicle, because of the increasing risks of surveillance that are present in every single vehicle, to restrict those secret conversations in protected areas. This is a wise and sensible thing for anyone concerned about security.

After it was suggested that it would be prudent for the ministry to stop using all cars from China, the minister replied: ‘That’s exactly what we are looking into at the moment.”

Broader Defence Background

The revelation follows claims from Scandinavian countries have alerted the UK to the presence of multi-purpose kill switches in Chinese-made electric buses, which could allow the Chinese government to disable public transport and bring chaos to public transit.

Additionally, a Russian spy ship was reportedly shining laser beams at Royal Air Force pilots, described as a “extremely risky” action by government representatives.

The broader security environment highlights the importance of strong protocols and vigilance in all aspects of official operations, from vehicle usage to communication practices.
